
2nd Lt Frank Ewart Bowers 1st Queens (Royal West Surrey Regiment) 5th Btn attd 10th Btn., formerly with Royal Naval Division.
Born 1 October 1891at Sutton-at-Hone Kent son of Mrs. S. A. and the late Benjamin Bowers Educated at Dartford Grammar school (1904-07) Siblings one sister and a brother Archibald D Bowers (Survived the war).
Joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve at HMS President (likely pre-war service) in August 1914 as an Able Seaman. He was then posted to Drake Battalion the Royal Naval Division 1st Naval brigade which consisted of 1st Drake 2nd Hawke 3rd Benbow and 4th Collingwood.
He fought at the defence of Antwerp where the 1st Brigade was positioned between forts 2 and 5. Antwerp was overrun and the RND was ordered to retreat. Some were interned in Groningen, some captured and Bowers along with the remainder managed to be evacuated successfully.
Latterly Bowers was deployed to Gallipoli and then on to France. Wounded at Beaumont-Hamel. He was fit to return to service later in 1916 and joined the Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment.
13/11/1916. Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant.
He returned to France then served in Italy from November 1917. He returned to France in January 1918. He was wounded and died on Easter Sunday, 31st March 1918 during The German Spring Offensive ‘Operation Michael’.
