The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) website confirms T3/026115 Driver Joe Lomas Fletcher of the Army Service Corps to have been the: “husband of Alice Cope (formerly Fletcher), of 13, Macclesfield Rd., Whaley Bridge, Stockport.”
Joe Lomas Fletcher was born in Tideswell in the Peak District of Derbyshire in 1882. In 1902, at the church of St John the Baptist, Tideswell, he wed Alice nee Heath. That couple had five children: Mabel Lomas Fletcher (born 1903); Frank Lomas Fletcher (1911); Sam Bromley G Lomas Fletcher (1912); James Edward Lomas Fletcher (1914); and Albert Lomas Fletcher (1916). (All their births were recorded in the Bakewell Registration District, which covered Tideswell). Unfortunately, Joe Lomas Fletcher was not located by any census. Nor, other than his CWGC entry, can any record of his military service be found.
The CWGC confirms that Joe Lomas Fletcher died on 23 April 1917, aged 32, and that his remains are interred in the churchyard of St John the Baptist, Tideswell. In 1921 at the church of St James, in Taxal, which is near Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire, Joe Lomas Fletcher’s widow remarried under the name Alice Lomas Fletcher. Her new husband was Thomas Cope.
