John Smart was born at 27 Mains Loan, Dundee in Scotland in 1876.

Enlisting in the Royal Artillery he first served as a Shoeing Smith during the Boer War and was promoted to the rank of Driver towards the end of the campaign.

During the Great War he was attached to the 6th Poona Division of the Indian Army taking part in the Mesopotamia campaign and specifically the Siege of Kut. Taken prisoner by the Turks following the surrender of the Kut garrison, he, like so many other Prisoners of War died in captivity on 14 September 1916.

Smart is buried in the Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery.
