Enlisted 10th August 1914 at Hornsey, Middlesex Posted to Gibraltar 4th September 1914 and return to England 15th February 1915. He entered France on 12th March 1915, reported missing on 16th September 1916 during the battles of Somme and later was presumed dead. Commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Picardie, France. Born 28th May 1894 In Moseley, Worcestershire to parents Arthur and Edith Emily Hands (nee Edwards) 1901 Census, Living at 1326 Marlboro Road, Southgate, Middlesex with Parents and 5 siblings, aged 6 years. 1911 Census, living at 7 Spencer Road, New Southgate North, Middlesex with parents and siblings and occupation stated as Clerk and Shorthand Typist to Shipping Agent, aged 16 years.
Was awarded the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal which his father received in July 1920.
Brother: Driver T4/259656. Charles William Hands, Horse Transport, Army Service Corps, survived the war.
