
Edward was born on 21st January 1879 in Plumbland, Cumberland, one of two children, and only son, of the Rev. Canon Edward Hassell Curwen, and Eleanor Maria Louise Curwen of Kirkandrews, Carlisle, Cumberland.
He was educated at Carlisle Grammar School (1891 to 1898) and then went to Queen’s College, Oxford where he was a member of the Oxford University Rifle Volunteer Corps. He graduated as a BA in 1902 and MA in 1910.
He then gained an appointment as classics master at Rotherham Grammar School and enlisted at Sheffield.
Lance Corporal, 12/85 Edward Curwen, 12th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment (Sheffield City Battalion) died on 1st July 1916, aged 37, during the fighting at Serre.
He is also commemorated on the Carlisle Grammar School War Memorial.

Alexander and William were also posted missing on 1st July 1916 (both aged 34) and are commemorated with Edward on Pier & Face 14B. H. E. Bailey is understood to have survived the war.
