William was born on 30th June 1886 in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, the son of Margaret Hair. (The family names appears as both Hair and Hare).

He was originally a reservist and served some time in India.

He later worked as a labourer at Messrs. Amos and Smith’s.

He was recalled on the outbreak of the war, went to France on 8th September 1914 and was wounded later that month.

It was during a period of convalescence that he married Edith Grantham on 6th March 1915. They lived at 206 Bean Street, Hull.

Lance Corporal, 3/7968 William Hare, 1st Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment died on 1st July 1916, aged 30, in an attack north of Fricourt.
