Humphrey was born in Benares, Bengal, India on 26th July 1895, one of at least three children of Granville Pennefather Evans and Grace Woodburn Evans.

His father served in the Indian Army rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel.

He was educated at Rossall School, Fleetwood, Lancashire.

He received his commission on 19th April 1915 and went to France on 16th July.

Lieutenant Humphrey Pennefather Evans, 2nd Battalion, South Wales Borderers died on 1st July 1916, aged 20, during an attack on Beaumont Hamel.

He is also commemorated on the war memorial in Pirbright, Surrey.
