He signed his Attestation papers at Lincoln on August 15th. 1917, being called up for service on August 19th. He was transferred to the 24th Training Battalion who were stationed at Thoresby on September 26th., then to Doncaster on November 1st. He was posted to the B.E.F. on April 5th. 1918 arriving in France at Calais on May 7th. actually, joining his Battalion on June 22nd.
Claude Langley died of wounds on July 24th. 1917, he is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Poperinghe, West Flanders, Belgium. Plot XXV111, Row G, Grave 7A.
Born in Swineshead, he enlisted at Lincoln giving his place of residence as Alford.
The 1901 census records Claude Langley, aged 1, and sister Alice, with brother Jack, Sarah and of John Langley a railway signalman, of Lineside, Swineshead.
The 1911 census records Claude Langley, aged 11, at school, and sister Alice, with brother Jack, and their parents Sarah and of John Langley a railway signalman, of Lineside, Swineshead.
His soldier’s effects of £4-0-6d, and war gratuity of £3 and pension was paid to his father. Personal goods returned to his family included letters, photos, a note book, a metal box and wallet.
Remembered with honour on the Belleau War Memorial inside St. John the Baptist Church.
