A MAN OF ALFORD.

BIRKITT, SCOTT. (BURKETT). Private. 22910. 1st. Regular Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment.

Formerly 6271 Lincolnshire Regiment.

He was the son of Mrs. Fanny Birkett of East Street, Alford. Born in Asterby, he enlisted at Lincoln giving his place of residence as Alford.

The 1891 census records Scott aged 6, sisters May and Emma and brothers Jesse, Fred, John and Stephen living with their parents Fanny and Joseph Burkett in Chapel Street, Alford.

The 1901 census records Scott aged 16, sisters Ellen, Maggie and Dorothy, and brothers Jesse, Fred and John living with their widowed mother Fanny in Chapel Cottage, Chapel Street.

The 1911 records Scott now 26, single, and brothers Fred, John and Jesse, and their widowed mother as boarders with Samuel Brown Oxley in East Street, Alford.

Entitled to the British War and Victory Medals. He signed his Attestation papers on April 4th 1916, aged 32, single, a fruiter drayman living in East End, Alford. Scott Birkett served at home between April 11th and July 23rd, embarking on July 24th. arriving in France the following day, before joining his battalion on July 25th.

Scott Birkett was killed in action on the 4th. July 1917, he is buried in Boyelles Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas de Calais, France. Plot 1, Row E, Grave 9.

His soldiers’ effects of £3-6-9d, and war gratuity of £4-10s and pension were paid to his mother Fanny as the sole legacy.

Remembered with honour on the Alford War Memorial in the grounds of St Wilfrid’s Church.
