Private Thomas Abbiss
772505
One of Dudley's Fallen

The son of Thomas and Mary Ann Abbiss, of Straits Rd., Lower Gornal and husband of Mary Ann Abbiss, of No. 91, Himley Rd., Lower Gornal.

On the 1911 Census, his trade is stated to be a joiner.

He was killed in the action at Bouchavesnes on 4th March 1917, aged 27. A successful attack, the German front line trenches (referred to as Pallas Trench and Fritz Trench) were captured and secured, though at heavy cost.

Having no known grave, his name appears on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing.

A plea for information as to his fate appeared in the Dudley Herald, giving us the detailed information that he served with No. 10 Section, 3rd Platoon, A Company, 10th Battalion; however, he is recorded by the CWGC as serving with the 1st Battalion.

However, on that date the 10th Worcesters were behind the lines at Arqueves, enjoying a period of training and no losses are recorded. The War Diary of the 1st Bn records a draft of 14 reinforcements arriving in February, so it is likely that Pte Abbiss did not have the opportunity to advise his family of the change.

He left behind a widow and a young daughter Beatrice.
