Private Henry Chattin
627811
One of Netherton's Fallen

Henry was the second son of Issachar and Susannah Chattin; on the 1911 census the family lived at Ct 3, 3 Windmill End, Netherton and Henry is described as a Pit Banksman at a colliery.

It is thought that he attested under the Derby Scheme in late 1915, and was called forward for service in June the following year. Killed in action on 25th January 1917 in the Capture of the Hai Salient, aged 34, he is buried in the Military Cemetery at Amara in Iraq. His elder brother John served with the 14th Worcesters, and would lose his life six months later.

A bachelor, his name is carved on the walls of Dudley's civic war memorial in Priory St alongside his brother's. The pair are also remembered on the war memorial St Peter’s, Darby End, Netherton.

(This story is based on his entry in the book “Dudley’s 1914-1918 War Memorial and the Men commemorated – 2nd Revised & Expanded Edition” by J. B. E. Hale. The book is published by Amazon, and there is also a Kindle version.)
