
Alfred was born in Limehouse, London, one of three children of William (a labourer) and Alice Emma Snelling of 85 Blondel Street, Battersea, London.
Alfred was employed by McCorquodale & Co. Ltd. (printers and stationers) as a compositor at the armoury, and had worked there about one year when he enlisted at London in March 1915.
He went to France on 23rd September 1915.
Rifleman, 301140 (1850) Alfred Snelling, 1st/5th Battalion, London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade) died on 1st July 1916, aged 22, during the fighting at Gommecourt.
It was reported that he was seen at 7.40 a.m. and later in the day was observed by his mate (who was wounded in the German second line) going forward to the third German line. He was then in the best of spirits and untouched, but no trace of him was ever found.
