
Rifleman Christopher Wright McRitchie, S/7136, 2nd Battalion, Rifle Brigade. Christopher was born on 21st August 1899, one of the two children of Thomas Chilcott McRitchie (a grocer) and Margaret Rowland McRitchie of 53, Lochend Road, Leith. He was educated at George Heriot's School (1901 to 1906) and then joined the Civil Service, second division, in the office of the Prison Commission, Home Office, London.
He enlisted in December 1914 and went to France in May 1915. He was mentioned in despatches of 16th June 1916. Rifleman Christopher McRitchie of the 2nd Battalion, Rifle Brigade died on 1st July 1916, aged 26, during fighting at Ovillers on the First day of the Battle of the Somme. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Pier and Face 16B and 16C as he has no known grave.
