Gazetted from Officer Cadet Unit, to be 2nd Lieutenant  - Royal Field Artillery, 26th May 1917.

Served fifteen months on Western Front, in Ypres Sector. 

Wounded at Upper Oosthoek Farm, about three miles south of Ypres.

Killed in action in Flanders, 15th Sept. 1918. His loss, one of his fellow-officers wrote, "will be greatly felt by officers and men, as he was a favourite with all ranks" and another said that, "familiar as they had grown with death, he had never seen his section - "Scotch to a man" - more moved, than they were by the loss of Mr Mathewson."
