The Battle of Monte Cassino
The 'soft underbelly' of Europe proved anything but, with the Italian theatre proving hard-fought and costly for both sides. The most well-known battle of the campaign was at Monte Cassino, where Allied forces were determined to break through entrenched German lines. Many lives were lost during this months long battle.
