How to Search for WW2 War Memorials

Our war memorial and war cemetery database contains information on about 23,000 cemeteries and memorials worldwide where Commonwealth casualties from the two world wars are commemorated.

It is possible to search for our cemeteries and memorials by war, as well as by name, location and even size.

Select Second World War beneath the drop down lists before searching by country and location. 

If you know the name of the CWGC location you wish to visit, you can enter it into the location field. An exact match is not required as if you do not enter an exact name, you will be presented with a list of possible matches.

The number of casualties field can be used in combination with the above or on its own to search for and find locations both large and small.

The Second World War ended in Europe on May 8, 1945. Discover a selection of famous Second World War cemeteries, monuments and sites.

Bayeux War Cemetery, Normandy, France

Bayeux War Cemetery, which was completed in 1952, contains 4,144 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 338 of them unidentified. There are also over 500 war graves of other nationalities, the majority German.

A commemorative ceremony was held at Bayeux War Cemetery for the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

Runnymede Memorial, Surrey, UK

The Air Forces Memorial at Runnymede commemorates by name over 20,000 men and women of the air forces, who were lost in the Second World War during operations from bases in the United Kingdom and North and Western Europe, and who have no known graves. The memorial was designed by Sir Edward Maufe with a sculpture by Vernon Hill.

Archangel Allied Cemetery, Russia

Archangel Allied Cemetery holds more than 200 casualties of both world wars. Situated on the White Sea coast, Archangel was one of the key ports through which supply convoys arrived in Russia. The cemetery also contains the Archangel Memorial which commemorates 219 British officers and men who died during the north Russian campaign and whose graves are not known.

WWII Memorial, Washington DC, US  

The National World War II Memorial honours the 16 million who served in the armed forces of the United States. The monument is constructed from stone architecture and is located adjacent to the Washington Monument, in the heart of the National Mall. It commemorates more than 400,000 who died as well as the millions who supported the war effort from home.

Rangoon Memorial, Myanmar

The Rangoon War Memorial bears the names of almost 27,000 men of the Commonwealth land forces who died during the campaigns in Burma (now Myanmar) and who have no known grave. The memorial stands in Taukkyan War Cemetery, which is the largest of the three war cemeteries in Burma. The cemetery now contains 6,374 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 867 of them unidentified.
